How to Choose an Osteopath for Your Baby, and What to Do When There Is None Near You

5 min read Nicolas Grimaldi

You have been told your baby should see an osteopath, and you are looking at a map with nothing useful on it. Or you have two names in your area and no way to tell them apart. I am Nicolas Grimaldi, a pediatric osteopath, and this is one of the questions parents send me most often. Here is my honest answer on how to choose an osteopath for your baby, and what I tell parents when there is none within reach.

Why choosing an osteopath for your baby is not straightforward

Because osteopathy is not the same thing everywhere. It does not exist in every country, and where it does, the training behind it varies. My rough sense is that it is practiced in somewhere around fifty five to sixty countries, and that only a fraction of those have training schools. Good schools and weaker ones sit side by side. That leaves a real problem, and it is one I cannot solve from where I stand. Good schools produce good practitioners. Weaker schools produce practitioners with less competency. From a parent's chair, there is almost no way to tell which one you are sitting in front of. A diploma on the wall does not tell you what the training behind it was worth. I am not saying this to worry you. I am saying it because the usual advice, search your area and book the first available appointment, does not account for it.

How to choose an osteopath for your baby

My answer is to start from a name that someone competent stands behind, rather than from a search engine. Over my career I have gathered the osteopaths I have met into one place. Some I trained with. Some I know personally. Some I heard about, or were recommended to me by people whose judgment I trust. You can look through my list of vetted pediatric osteopaths. It is not an open listing that anyone can add themselves to. Every name on it came through me. I also keep it under review. Once in a while a parent writes to me about someone I recommended who did not show the competency I expected. When that happens, I look at that listing again and I change it if it needs changing. That feedback loop is the part that makes the list worth anything, and it only works because parents tell me. So my practical answer has two halves. Use the list where it reaches you. And if a visit does not sit right with you, say so, so the list stays clean for the next parent. I want to be straight about the limit. The list covers the places where I have a network. It cannot cover everywhere. If there is nobody near you, that is the situation the rest of this article is about.

What can you do if there is no osteopath near you?

Work at home, meticulously, and start early. When hands-on care is out of reach, my answer is the same one I give in my practice: use the techniques I teach to give your baby the best ground you can. It does not replace an osteopath. It is the strongest thing inside your control, and it is available to you tonight. These are not random exercises. Each one has a purpose, and they are built to work together:

  • Holds, so that the way you carry your baby through the day lets tension release rather than build.
  • Massage and stretch sequences, which work on the tension underneath a preferred side.
  • Movement work, which builds strength and balance through the whole body as your baby grows. The routine is what does the work, never one piece of it on its own. That is the single most common thing parents get wrong. What I will not do is teach your hands in an article. Where you place them, how much pressure, in what order, for how long: that detail is the difference between a technique that helps and one that does nothing at all. I demonstrate every technique on video in the Fulkrum Academy 0 to 6 months program, because seeing it done is the only way to get it right. Parents who have run the techniques meticulously since birth have written back to me about how their baby was doing, and I am glad every time. I am not going to turn that into a promise or a formula. What I claim for these techniques is that they build a ground of balance and strength that supports your baby's development.

Why I answer through a community now

Because I cannot keep up on my own. Until recently I answered every comment and every message myself. With the volume of messages coming in, that stopped being possible, and parents were waiting too long on my inbox. The community exists so you can still reach me without that being the bottleneck.

What I am working on for the longer term

More competent practitioners, in more places. I cannot make them appear where there are none today, and I cannot clone myself, as much as parents ask me to. What I can do is build toward it. We are working on an ecosystem of clinics around the world, with practitioners we train and supervise over years, and on school projects, toward an international standard of practice. This is a lifelong project and I will not put a date on it. Awareness helps, though. Social media has put osteopathy in front of far more people than before, and some of them go on to want to become osteopaths themselves. That is how the ecosystem grows. None of it helps you this month, which is exactly why the work at home matters now.

Start the home work with me

If there is an osteopath within reach of you, my advice does not change: go early, and start from the osteopaths I vouch for if it covers your area. If there is nobody near you, the home routine is where your leverage is, and it is worth doing properly. Either way, learn the techniques. Sign up to the Fulkrum Academy 0 to 6 months program and work through it with me. I demonstrate every technique on video, step by step, in the order I use them, so you know exactly what your hands are doing and when. That is the part an article cannot give you.
